Gable House stands as a reimagining of what a family home can be. Designed by Studio Doherty & Folk Architects, it is an exploration of creativity and expression, where every room invites discovery and tells a unique story. This is a home that challenges convention, where artful design and practical living coexist in perfect harmony.
Located within a heritage-sensitive inner-city Melbourne suburb, the Queen Anne-Federation period residence sits on a corner site, distinguished by its varied roof forms, including a prominent tower. The brief centred on reorganising internal living spaces to address a central courtyard and creating a new bedroom wing for the family.
A zinc-clad extension by Folk Architects introduces a contemporary edge. A glazed bridge, framing the rear courtyard terrace, connects the original house to the new addition. The rear addition, with its asymmetrical roof forms clad in diamond zinc shingles, references the picturesque qualities of the existing residence while respecting the hierarchy of the heritage structure.
The open-plan kitchen and dining area now occupies what was once a maze of smaller rooms, including a larder and several store cupboards. Opening up the space allowed for better flow and natural light, while salvaged bricks were reused to retain a connection to the home’s past.
The ceiling, which had deteriorated beyond repair, was replaced with a timber-lined design that references the panelled interior of the turret at the home’s entry. This addition brings warmth and continuity to the reimagined space. Bold yet considered colour choices, reflective surfaces, pale blue quartzite, and a lipstick-pink pantry add energy and cohesion to the kitchen, where the quartzite island acts as the heart of the home.
From the fire-engine-red fireplace in the study to the custom joinery in stone paint finish and retro rose, Gable House reveals a confident and layered material palette. Murano glass chandeliers and carefully curated vintage and contemporary pieces punctuate the interiors, adding depth and character.
In the private quarters, the main bedroom is a calm retreat, softened by warm white tones and the luxurious feel of stone and plush textiles. The master ensuite is thoughtfully layered, with lilac-toned ombre tiles complementing the natural veining of the stone, creating a warm and inviting ambience.
The surrounding landscape, designed by Mud Office, further enhances the experience. The front garden leans into the English heritage of the home with meandering paths and delicate flora, while the rear courtyard is enveloped in a lush tropical gardenscape.
Executed by Exceed Group, this build reflects Studio Doherty & Folk’s commitment to pushing creative boundaries while embracing the comforts of family life.
