Located in Thornton (country Victoria), this single-level, four-bedroom country home is where comfort and simplicity get away to on long weekends. Cut into the hillside and designed as three separate pavilions connected by glass link-ways, the home is oriented to maximise both thermal comfort and framed views amidst an idyllic bush setting.
A collaboration between Studio Doherty and Detail 9 Architects, our approach for the interiors is based on simplicity, balance and restraint – enabling the home to sit in harmony with its country surroundings, yet feel truly contemporary in design. Continuity is achieved through a soft, natural colour palette punctuated with a calming pale blue. The meticulous melding of crazy paving and timber flooring functions as a device to delineate zones while adding texture and interest.
Large sliding doors enable the main living areas to spill out onto the surrounding deck areas – doubling the living space, bringing the outside-in, and providing continuous, ever-changing views of the beautiful landscape beyond. Roof trusses in the heart of the home create a dramatic statement that leads to a soaring fireplace, its elegant, tapered shape following the pitch of the roof to create more exquisitely framed views. A tan leather bench seat and pendant light sit to one side, contrasting with the greenery outside while surface-mounted spots, recessed down-lights and circular wall lights – all work to create a cosy atmosphere and complete the contemporary look and feel.
Thornton has been thoughtfully decorated with lush fabrics, soft colours, artisanal objects and artworks, creating a tranquil escape that’s truly suited to its country surroundings and fulfils our client’s desire for a ‘lock and leave’ retreat.
