Our Elonera House clients envisioned a home where family could effortlessly gather, where friends and neighbours could spontaneously come together. Their desire for an open and welcoming home deeply influenced our design approach.

Our primary inspiration was to preserve as much of the existing home as possible, emphasizing its charm and character. Rather than opting for a significant extension, we focused on enhancing within the original footprint. Our goal was to celebrate the Edwardian exterior, strengthen the connection to the expansive garden, and elevate the interiors to comfortably accommodate their growing family of five for years to come.

Upon entering the home, a sense of familiarity and tranquillity immediately envelops you. The encircling verandah, intricate lattice work, and inviting entry distinguish this home from others in the area. Inside, a meandering hallway with generous ceiling heights and rooms on either side maintains the original charm of the home. The back room (encompassing Kitchen, Living and Dining), with its distinctive angled walls and new raised windows and doors, feels spacious and welcoming.

New elements were seamlessly integrated into the existing architecture, using layers of subdued tones and varying matte and gloss finishes to create a serene yet nuanced interior. For instance, the rumpus room features quiet dusty blue tones to the walls, which is juxtaposed a with bold, dynamic landscape wallpaper to the ceiling, achieving a cohesive yet diverse aesthetic.

Having previously worked on their home, we understood our clients’ design preferences and aspirations. While their former residence was colourful and playful, Elonera House embraces a relaxed, casual atmosphere. Light timber accents envelope the floors, ceilings, and joinery to establish a warm, inviting ambiance. An earthy palette of yellows and smoky blues complements the timber elements and offers a vibrant contrast to the garden, which remains a focal point.

The kitchen and living room are united by a muted yellow gloss tile wall that extends into the living room joinery, creating a gentle transition between spaces. A communal island bench, crafted from strongly veined quartzite, with its intricate detailing is a nod to our client’s connection to the hospitality industry. A soft, muddy pink painted threshold separates the original house from the contemporary back room, adding a touch of whimsy.

Each room was designed with its own unique character in mind; however it was essential that we ensured a connection throughout. In the main bedroom and ensuite, a blend of textures and materials converge to create a distinctive and calming retreat. Soft blue tones and charcoal marble bedside tables define the bedroom, while the ensuite features a mix of tiles, polished plaster, and natural stone for a serene bathing experience.

Our focus was on maintaining the original footprint and zeroing in on interior reconfiguration. Small additions on the east side, housing the laundry, walk-in pantry, and powder room, enhance functionality without altering the home’s external appearance. Expanded windows in key areas maximize natural light and garden views, ensuring a bright and inviting atmosphere throughout the day.

Elonera House embodies a harmonious blend of heritage and modernity, offering a space that feels both expansive and intimate, ready to welcome loved ones for years to come. The collaborative relationship with our clients, marked by mutual respect and shared vision, was instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.
